A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is required under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. MSDS’s contain useful information such as flash point, toxicity, procedures for spills and leaks, and storage guidelines. Although there is an effort currently underway to standardizes MSDS’s the quality of individual MSDS’s vary. A MSDS may be useful but it can not substitute for prudent practices and comprehensive risk management.
WalMart Stores - MSDS information for most consumer products is available at the WalMart MSDS site.
MSDS Search - The largest Internet source for MSDSs with over 1 million and growing. The site provides a MSDS dictionary, a FAQ’s section, speed links to over 1000 manufacturers, and a search engine.
Vermont SIRI - Over 180,000 MSDSs searchable by manufacturer, product name, CAS and NSN number, or chemical name. An extensive toxicity database is also available.
Cornell University - 325,000 searchable MSDSs.
Where To Find Material Safety Data Sheets on the Internet - This University of Kentucky site provides a list of over 85 free Internet sources for MSDSs. In addition the site provides answers to the most common questions regarding MSDSs and offers a discussion group.
ECDIN (Environmental Chemical Data and Information Network) - An Italian based site with 120,000 entries. This is not a MSDS site but does contain a wealth of toxicological data as well as the physical and chemical properties of many chemicals.
Sigma, Aldrich - You must register (no charge) to obtain access to the site, which contains 90,000 MSDSs.
